The municipality covers an area of 44.18 km² and is policed by two stations: Maheshtala and Rabindranagar.

Construction & the PPP Experiment

The Batanagar Flyover holds a distinctive place in Kolkata's infrastructure history as the city's first elevated roadway developed under a public-private partnership framework. The project was conceived as part of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, a central government initiative aimed at modernizing urban transport. L&T, working through a consortium with RiverBank Holdings and its joint venture partner L&T Dabriwala, took on the building work.

Route & Design

Stretching 7.5 kilometres and 28 feet wide, the two-lane Batanagar Flyover links the locality of Batanagar to Jinjira Bazaar, threading through the southern suburbs of Kolkata. It is recognized as the longest flyover in West Bengal. The need for this elevated corridor grew out of a persistent bottleneck on the Budge Budge Trunk Road, which runs between Batanagar and Budge Budge via Taratala. That arterial road was simply too narrow for the volume of traffic it carried, making gridlock an almost daily reality for drivers and bus passengers alike. The flyover was conceived as a direct remedy: by lifting a portion of the traffic above ground level, planners hoped to relieve the chronic congestion that had become a defining feature of the corridor. The structure's alignment across Maheshtala makes it a critical piece of the southern Kolkata transport network, offering a faster, more predictable route for those travelling between the two endpoints without having to navigate the congested surface streets below.

Serving a Million Commuters

The Sampriti Flyover was designed with a specific and enormous user base in mind. An estimated ten lakh—roughly one million—people depend on this corridor for their daily commutes. The catchment area spans Pujali, Budge Budge, Maheshtala, and the Asuti gram panchayat, all of which feed into the Batanagar-Jinjira Bazaar route. Beyond individual households, the flyover is a lifeline for residents of several large housing developments in the vicinity, including Batanagar Riverside Township, Eden City, Greenfield City, and Purti. For families living in these planned communities, the elevated roadway shortens travel times and reduces the frustration of being trapped in the dense traffic that characterizes the surface roads. In a city where millions navigate increasingly crowded streets every morning and evening, a dedicated elevated link of this scale represents a meaningful quality-of-life improvement for an entire swath of southern Kolkata's population.

Cracks in the Harmony

Barely a year after the flyover opened to traffic, a troubling structural problem surfaced. The damage was spotted during a routine inspection, and authorities promptly halted all vehicular movement on the affected section to prevent any risk to commuters. The timing made the issue particularly pointed: the flyover had been christened Sampriti, a Bengali word meaning harmony, a name that now carried an uncomfortable irony given the structural distress so soon after inauguration. The incident raised questions about the long-term durability of the PPP-built structure and the oversight mechanisms in place to monitor its condition. For the millions of daily users who had come to rely on the elevated route, the sudden closure was a stark reminder that even the most ambitious infrastructure projects require vigilant, ongoing maintenance to remain safe and functional.
