Meerut's name is believed to have evolved from Mayarashtra, the capital of the mythological king Mayasura. Another tradition attributes the city's origin to King Yudhishthira granting land to Mayasura. An alternative version suggests the name derives from King Mahipala of Indraprastha. Archaeological excavations at Vidura-ka-Tila revealed remains of the ancient city of Hastinapur, and a Harappan settlement at Alamgirpur marks the easternmost extent of the Indus Valley civilisation. Meerut was a Buddhist centre under Mauryan emperor Ashoka, and the Ashoka Pillar now at Delhi Ridge was originally brought from Meerut by Firuz Shah Tughluq.

The name Meerut traces back to Mayarashtra, the legendary capital of Mayasura, a mythological architect and father of Mandodari, wife of Ravana. One tradition holds that King Yudhishthira granted the land to Mayasura in recognition of his architectural genius, who then named the region Maharashtra—a name distinct from the modern Indian state. Over centuries, the name shifted through Mairashtra, Mai-dant-ka-khera, and Mairaath before settling into its current form. An alternative theory links the city to King Mahipala, ruler of Indraprastha. The city also harbors Alamgirpur, the easternmost known Harappan settlement.
