Maoming County was established c. The area was originally held by the Baiyue before Qin invasion in the late 3rd century BC. Under the Qing, it comprised part of Gaozhou Prefecture. Former Communist Party Secretary Zhou Zhenhong was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for corruption related to the p-Xylene scandal.
