Mataram is a modern city formed from the merger of three formerly separate towns: the old port town of Ampenan in the west, the administrative center of Mataram, and the commercial town of Cakranegara to the east. Further east lies the district of Sweta, home to Lombok's biggest market and bus terminal. These towns are linked by an 8 km one-way street that runs from Ampenan through Mataram to Cakranegara, then continues east as the principal cross-island highway to Labuhan Lombok and Kayangan. The indigenous Sasak people form the majority of residents, alongside Balinese, Javanese, Buginese, Bimanese, Tionghoa-Peranakan, and a small number of Arab Indonesians of Yemeni descent. A notable ethnic Malay settlement, Kampung Melayu, exists in the Ampenan district, where residents speak Ampenan Malay. Mataram society primarily speaks the Sasak language, with Indonesian used in formal contexts. The Mataram Sasak dialect is common at home or recreation, and Balinese is also spoken due to the city's past as a colony of the Karangasem kingdom of Bali. The city has a tropical monsoon climate with heavy rainfall from October to March and moderate to little rainfall from April to September.
