The city’s municipal governance began on 12 June 1985 when five Gram Panchayats were merged to form the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Council. This council was later expanded on 23 January 1990 to include four additional village panchayats: Raigad-Murdhe, Dongri, Uttan, and Versova. After the elected municipal body’s five-year term ended on 27 August 2022, the corporation came under administrative rule due to delays in elections caused by legal challenges related to OBC reservation; Municipal Commissioner Dilip Dhole was appointed as administrator, and the MBMC continues to be run by a state-appointed administrator.
As of April 2026, the city received its first metro line, the first in Thane District, with Phase 1 of Mumbai Metro Line 9 opening from Dahisar (E) to Kashigaon.
